What is Positive Discipline

Positive Discipline is a program designed to teach young people to become responsible, respectful and resourceful members of their communities. Discipline is often associated with punishment, but the word discipline comes from the latin disciplina, which means to teach. In Positive Discipline, there is no humiliation, punishment or putting downs. Adults teach in a firm AND kind way.

Philosophy & Developmental Theories

Positive Discipline is based on the teachings of Alfred Adler, a physician, psychotherapist, and the founder of Adlerian psychology,  called individual psychology, which emphasizes the human need and ability to create positive social change and impact. Adler placed great emphasis on 'Gemeinschaftsgefühl' or social interest, in other words, the importance for human development to achieve a sense of solidarity or fellowship with humanity and the local community. Cooperating, while important for the maintenance of society, is also important for achieving psychological health in the individual.

A Misbehaved child is a discouraged child

Observing the meaning behind the child's behavior can help the adult become aware and more prepare to deal with the real issue of the child's misbehavior. Adults will broaden their understanding in regards to misbehavior by becoming aware that behind a misbehavior there is child who just wants to belong and he/she is confused about the way to fullfil its intention.

Imagine an iceberg. The top visible part is the misbehavior, the immersed part below the water is the belief which gives rise to the behavior.

In Positive Discipline we dive deep into the child's world to comprehend the origin of the misbehavior.

Positive Discipline in Portuguese

Based on research
Recent research explains that children from birth are equipped with a powerful neural network ready to connect with other people. Children who have a strong sense of connection with family, school, their community, have less probability to misbehave. In order for children to become successful, contributing members of society, they need to learn social and life skills. Positive Discipline is based on the understanding that discipline must be taught and that  discipline also teaches.
